The Student Records System is used by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC™) to track medical students during all four years of medical school. Three separate but integrated interfaces were developed to meet the requirements for a medical school office, the central office, and an administrator of the system.
The AAMC™ Student Records System (SRS) contains a record for every student currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. allopathic medical school. American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS™) matriculant data and information provided by all registrars on any non-AMCAS™ matriculants (such as advanced standing transfers) are the foundation for each record in the database. After applicants matriculate, their biographic and enrollment status data are continually updated by the medical schools using an internet interface, eliminating the use of paper forms forever.
The database integrates information not only from the AAMC™, but also from the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP™). (The NRMP™ matches medical students and medical residency programs that need interns. See also FindAResident™.) This information is used to establish a record containing the match result or status for each current graduate of an accredited U.S. allopathic medical school who participated in the NRMPTM. Medical schools also make updates and provide information for their seniors who did not participate in the NRMP™ including the military match.
Federal and state agencies as well as other institutions routinely turn to the AAMC™ as a primary source for aggregate undergraduate and graduate medical education data. Medical schools may request individualized reports to assist them in evaluating the trends within their institutions. AAMC™’s ability to respond to these requests in an authoritative and timely manner is dependent upon the expedient exchange of data between medical schools and the AAMC™.
These data are also used by the AAMC™ to assess national trends and support the Association's formal position on pivotal issues in medical education. Data from these reports may be used within the AAMC™ and when advising on strategies for the advocacy of issues in academic medicine. The AAMC™ maximizes availability of its integrated information systems and constituent user connectivity by taking full advantage of internet infrastructure technology. |
