The Summer Medical Education Program (SMEP), formerly the Minority Medical Education Program (MMEP), is a national academic enrichment program that helps promising, highly motivated students gain admission to medical school. The SMEP program accepts college undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students who are interested in careers in the health professions and prepares them for the competitive medical school admission process.
This program is intended for students who are strong advocates for diversity and/or come from groups that are underrepresented in medicine. For instance, applicants may come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, racial and ethnic groups that historically have been underrepresented in medicine, or parts of the country (such as rural areas) where residents historically have been underrepresented in medicine. |
